Ensenada, Baja California
The 45th annual SCORE, Tecate Baja 1000 was an epic undertaking. The race traveled an amazing 1,121.55 miles down the Baja Peninsula. Shaffer Motorsports used teamwork, ingenuity and true grit to complete the entire course in 33 hours and 17 minutes; taking second place and a possible championship. At the time of this writing, the final championship points tally is still underway.
It didn’t look promising for Mike Shaffer before the race. He would drive the first leg and had been ill for days. “I felt good on raceday, at least in the beginning,” Said Mike, “We started behind the 1600 cars and they kick up a lot of mud. We were getting roosted bad as we caught and passed many of them.

Shaffer Motorsports is putting the final touches on their Class 4 racecar before heading south to compete in the 45th annual SCORE, Tecate Baja 1000. The course changes year to year from a loop race to a full run down the peninsula. This year it will start in Ensenada and zig zag down the peninsula covering 1,121.55 miles of beautiful yet brutal terrain before it reaches the finish line in La Paz. Adding to the already challenging course, Hurricane Paul did severe damage in Baja Sur when it hit landfall only a few weeks ago. The peninsula experienced flooding, washouts and damage due to high winds that has caused some re-routing of the course.

Ian Twitchel usually co-drives for his father Shawn in the Transfer Case Express class 4 race car, however he was still recovering from surgery, so this trip he had time to get great footage and has put together a fantastic video recap of our Baja 500 adventure!
Shaffer Motorsports was optimistic heading into the Baja 500. Their win in San Felipe had them just six points out of the championship points lead and both the Transfercase Express, Torchmate racecar and the team were working better than ever. The race started off on a bad note when without warning, the gps acted up, it was unable to locate any satellites. It took until mile 89 for the gps to function and to add to the mix their race radio was not receiving. Unbeknownst to them at the time, the crew could hear them but they could not get a response.
Despite the electronic bug-a-boos they were making good time and got out to an early lead Continue reading
We had left for San Felipe a week early to get some valuable per-running in. As we would be making a drivers changes, with separate sections to pre-runners we managed to cover the entire course, up to three times, during the first three days. I did manage to get stuck with our new per-runner but had the pleasure of being help by Cameron Steele and Jesse Jones , now how cool is that, thanks again guys.
OAKLAND, CA MARCH 13, 2012 Shaffer-Motorsports car #401 won the San Felipe 250 in Class 4 last weekend in Baja, Mexico. After a long week of prerunning and a 24 hour turn around to the US for a rebuilt transaxle, the team made the mad dash to the finish line with only 12 minutes separating them from second. “It was quite a race. From being down at the half way point, then making a great pass at RM194 for the lead, then watching Daniel put some time on them, we just focused on keeping the sprint up,” said Mike Shaffer, driver of record and owner of Shaffer’s Offroad.

OAKLAND, CA JANUARY 19, 2012 Shaffer-Motorsports team car #401 finished second on both Saturday and Sunday at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. The team debuted the new black, red and white look for the 2012 season including the addition of title sponsor Transfer Case Express while still being supported by Torchmate CNC Cutting Systems. “We had fun even though we had to pull a motor out on Saturday after running with no clutch during the whole race,” said Mike Shaffer, driver of record. “The wheel to wheel action that was also nose to tail made for a very exciting race to drive, and then it was even cooler that we got to watch all the other classes when we weren’t racing.”
